David Dobereiner - Matripolis

This is a model of a 'thought experiment' in which the Siena plaza referred to above is expanded to meet the
requirements of the solar age we are approaching.

The floor of the plaza itself remains as is, with the exception that the city hall has been upgraded to a public assembly building, the campanile remaining as a
symbol.

The life of the plaza continues but the wall of buildings surrounding it has been radically stepped back to allow permaculture to take place on the 'treads' with expanded housing in the 'risers'.

Since vehicular traffic has already been sensibly excluded, the streets accessing the plaza are covered over to provide a continuous linear park system for pedestrian, bike and wheel chair use, city wide.

Good Bye roads and traffic!

A gentle (1:20), spiral, three lane ramp connects all levels. High tech, cable supported and metallic it is held clear of the (necessarily) heavy construction of the terraces, to which it acts as a foil.

Multi level segments of housing each are assigned a common space to do whatever they like with. Tailored to their own requirements they could provide common dining and other facilities for co-housing groups, day care, teen centers, clubs, gardening tools and whatever.

These are the neighborhood centers that punctuate the slopes and are easily accessed from all levels, incorporating their own internal vertical circulation in addition to access bridges from higher levels.

With the top roof providing space for solar and wind energy collection in addition to more garden space, we have all the ingredients of the Matripolis urban development system.

Except one, and a big one!

The base, housing the machine slave that makes this all possible. Like the mad relative in a Victorian melodrama it is never seen.

But it is there, and needs to be.
